To drink wine in moderate amounts has
long been known to have positive effects on the human body.
Resveratrol is the active compound in wine and lies behind the
'French Paradox', i.e. the circumstance that the incidence of
coronary heart diseases are considerably fewer in southern France
than in other countries - despite a high dietary intake of
saturated fats.

Resveratrol is a polyphenol, part of a group of chemical
substances called stilbenes. It occurs naturally and is found in
low concentration in some of our most common fruits, such as grapes
and blueberries.
The preventative features of resveratrol are seen in their purest
form in plants, as many produce it when they are attacked by
bacteria or fungi. Grape plants produce resveratrol as an innate
defense mechanism against stress-in particular, cold temperatures
and excess moisture.
The trans-isomeric form of resveratrol has many health benefits on
humans such as anti-aging properties, anti-inflammatory and
cardiovascular protective activity.
Resveratrol has also been associated with prevention of cancer and
increased lifespan in a number of living species. Resveratrol
treatment can mimic calorie restriction and thereby have
life-prolonging effects lifespan, as a healthy life also gives a
longer life.
